What Causes Frequent Urination While On Crestor?

I just noticed faint blood spots on my under pants. Didn t notice any blood as I urinated today but must have been some when I was sitting during bowel movements. Been on 5 mg Crestor for four months. Frequent and intense urination right after taking pill. My cholesterol numbers were much better this checkup but frequent urination and always being tired in afternoon make me want to get off this stuff! I m 66 year old male

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The following conditions have to be met in order to certify that a drug has really caused a certain side effect:
- associate the time of drug introduction into your regimen with the symptoms. You've noticed indeed that your symptoms started right after taking Crestor for the first time.
- Stopping the drug should make the symptoms improve or disappear completely.
- Reinitiating the drug should make the symptoms recur.
- no other adequate explanation for your symptom.

Crestor and other statins may indeed cause a multitude of symptoms that may lead the patient to abandon treatment. Sometimes trying a different statin - I would have gone for a less potent one like Pravastatin for example - may help. If you can't find a statin that causes no trouble then you shouldn't take statins. Ezetimibe is a less potent alternative to statins.

Make sure you let your doctor know before taking any decision regarding your treatment!
