Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My aunt is 88 years old. She has fullness when she gets up in the morning, and doesn t have much of an appetite. She is currently in rehab due to fracture of her tailbone. She says she is in a great deal of pain. What could be the cause of her feeling full even though she eats very little? This happens in the mornings and continues throughout the day.
I understand that your 88 year old aunt is lacking appetite and is feeling full even though she is not eating much while recovering after a tail bone fracture.
Firstly, I must inform you that at 88 years a lack of appetite and this fullness feeling is not uncommon not necessarily pathological. According to numerous studies people tend to eat less and less as they get older. We tend to eat around 19 kcal less each year we age. That means her normal intake at her age would be with around 1700 kcal less than that of a 20 year old female. This also translates into a lack of appetite and a full stomach sensation after just a few bites. Her stomach is also also not able to retain that much food and the full sensation kicks in quite fast.
On the other hand pain also has its effects on appetite. It is normal for people experiencing great amounts of pain to lack appetite.
Thirdly a condition named ageing anorexia could also be the case (but not as common as the situation I described above), diagnosis for which I advice you to see a Geriatrician.
Hope I helped you with my answer.
