What Causes Hard Bumps Along The Scar Line Of Stitches?
Hi, I recently had stitches removed on my shoulder area from having a scar removed. She put dissolvable stitches underneath and has removed the outer stitches, however I am not certain that every outer stitch has been removed. I can see the black stitches underneath the skin which she had said is the dissolvable kind. I am thinking that my skin just grew over them and they need to be removed. I now have a couple hard bumps along the scar line and a few areas that have a white appearance to them.
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
These hard bumps along the scar line are actually excessive scar tissue i.e hypertrophic scaring, since it is raised above the flat surface and felt as a knot. There are various factors that can lead to a hypertrophic raised scar like location of the scar (shoulder and chest are particularly predisposed for hypertrophic and keloid scaring) tension across the scar line, infection of the wound, genetic predisposition etc. Hypertrophic scaring usually resolves with time and 6 months time would be enough for the hard knots to dissolve and become flat. I would suggest you to just wait and watch. You may use a topical silicone gel to help it flatten Or other topical scar gels containing ingredients like allium cepa extract, allantoin etc may also be useful in raised hypertrophic scars.
