What Causes Hard Spots On The Body?

For years I have lumps, or hard spots in my calf muscles on both legs. Pressing on those spots is sometimes painful but is mushy. I workout at the gym everyday, and the trainer used a roller to roll these out, or I use a rolling pin at home. But why are they there, and keep coming back after rolling out.
