What Causes Heart Palpitations With Chest Pain And Numbness?

Last 3 to 4 days when i am about to sleep i am being awakened by a sudden feel like my heart is going to stop. This forces me to sit or stand up and breathe heavily and when i stand up i feel slight numbness in my head, hand and legs. This always happens when i am about to sleep. I am also getting chest pains. But other time i feel just ok and don t have any problems while exercising. What can be the problem?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Your symptoms don't seem to be related to any cardiac disorders.

Gastroesophageal reflux or anxiety can trigger this clinical scenario. A cardiac arrhythmia can not be excluded, although your symptoms are not typical.

Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a careful physical exam and some tests:

- a chest X ray study and pulmonary function tests
- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound
- an ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring to investigate for any possible cardiac arrhythmia.

Meanwhile, I would recommend trying an antiacid or PPI (omeprazole) before sleep. If it helps improve your situation, I would recommend performing a fibrogastroscopy.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
