12 year old granddaughter started menses about 18 months ago. Her periods are very heavy, sometimes quarter sized clots and numerous times a month. This morning she briefly passed out while shopping. Has been tired and sleeping about 10-12 hourly daily

The immaturity of the reproductive system with resultant anovulation is a cause. The menorrhagia can be treated with styptics, hormones, maintenance of proper nutrition through diet and supplements. Avoidance of stress is needed. Anemia is a common consequence and should be promptly corrected. Please take her to a specialist for a complete evaluation and plan further management.
