What Causes Heavy Bleeding With Severe Cramps While On Birth Control Shot?
A friend has been on the birth control shot for 2 years and isn t supposed to have a period. Tonight, she started bleeding heavily and very red, and she s having painful lower abdomen and back cramps. This is very unusual. Should we be worried enough to take her to the ER?
Hello, I have gone through your query and understood the concern. It is true that while one is on a depo shot absence of a menstrual period is the usual observation. Yet, when the hormone balance that causes this situation is disturbed as in weight gain which is common with hormone contraception, withdrawal bleeding can occur. Also, it is vital that a close watch is kept on the hemopoietic system for possible abnormal developments while on hormones. I would ask you to take your friend to the emergency room for further management. She needs styptics to control the bleeding and proper evaluation. Hope this helps.
