What Causes Heavy Breathing Continuously?

My son is five years old and has been breathing kind of heavy ( i can hear him breath) when he is seated, and also when he is asleep. He has not a cold recently nor been sick. Its been going on for a few weeks now. What could be the cause of this?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Is it bothering him? Had he ever complained of dyspnea? Is it a noisy breathing, as occurring with nasal block?

If he do not have fever, cough or exercise intolerance (playing/running), and this is not bothering him, this is unlikely to be something significant. Also, you can count number of breaths in a minute. In a 5 year child, normal is 20-25 breaths/minute. If it is more than this, we can evaluate further.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
