What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

i am 20 years old. Since i was 15 years i have been getting heavy menstrual periods for about 3 weeks and the doctors advised me to drink family planning pills to stop it. It stops and some times the problem gets back again. Please help me what might be the problem

Hormone assays, sonogram of the pelvis, blood counts and urinalysis are needed to detect the cause for the prolonged heavy periods. Maintenance of a healthy lifestyle is essential. If no specific cause is detected, use of oral contraceptive pills for a few years is usually sufficient to solve the problem. If hormone abnormalities are detected, correction is the cure. If PCOD is detected, standard treatment protocol is adopted. Hope this helps.
