What Causes High Alkaline Phosphate Level During Pregnancy?

Hello Sir, My wife s alkaline phosphate level in the blood is 285 IU/l. She is 36 week pregnant now. She feels more itching all over the body. Doctor advised my wife to take Liv-52 & Udiliv 300 mg thrice a day. Kindly advise us whether the diagnosis is going in right direction. Thanks you very much in advance!!!

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Keeping in view that your wife is 36 week pregnant, an increase in levels of alkaline phosphatase and pruritis (itching) is explainable.
During pregnancy the level of bile salts and alkaline phosphatase rise due to cholestasis.
Cholestasis is collection or stasis of bile salts in the body.
Bile salts are responsible for itching.
This condition clears away as delivery takes place.
This is a physiological change seen during pregnancy.
The drugs prescribed to your wife are hepatoprotective.
These drugs maintain the health and well being of the liver cells and also to reduce the levels of bile salts to relieve the itching.

Thanks and take care
