I tested my blood sugar upon waking and it was 188 (I know this is high, I'm newly diagnosed and still working to get my BS into normal range). I wasn't hungry so I didn't eat right away and tested my blood sugar again before eating about an hour later. This test had a result of 213. What would cause this jump in blood sugar without eating? I am not taking any medications at this time.
One of the main pathology in Diabetes is the increased hepatic glucose output. Generally during fasting our blood sugar is maintained by the glucose which comes out of the liver. The liver should stop pushing out glucose when blood glucose levels are normal. In diabetes this sensing mechanism is faulty and the liver keeps on pushing glucose irrelevant to blood sugar values leading to a high sugar value. Since you say you are a newly diagnosed diabetic i suggest you to go through my Blog which is exclusively for diabetes patient education. blog address is www.riyazsheena.blogspot.in Now this erratic glucose output can be managed with drugs like metformin. Hope i have answered your query Dr.Riyaz Sheriff
