Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
In
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) inappropriate function of lower esophageal sphincter results in acid reflux into esophagus. The acid irritates esophageal mucosa causing pain, heartburn, or hoarseness. Prilosec (
omeprazole) is agood medicine to treat GERD. It belongs to
proton pump inhibitors group that decrease
gastric acid production.
I would recommend you to continue medication along with the following life style modifications. If you are taking prilosec once a day it is recommended to take it before the dinner. Usually
acid reflux happens once a person in a horizontal position. Please follow the life style modifications: try to lose weight if obese, avoid foods that increase acidity of your stomach such as alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, chocolate, or any spicy food. Also avoid eating within 3 hours before bedtime. Sleep in a bed with a pillow elevating your head 6 to 8 inches.
If you have the disease present for more than 5 years, difficulty or pain with swallowing (dysphagia or
odynophagia), any signs of anemia (easy fatigability, pallor),
weight loss you should talk with your doctor about endoscopic evaluation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you,
