What Causes Hypovolemic Shock After Bowel Resection?
my husband 57 years old healthy developed hypovolemic shock right after herniorrhaphy and small bowel resection, what may have contributed to his hypovolemic state if he had minimal blood loss and the basic metabolic panel results include hypernatremia
Welcome to HCM. I think a number of things could have contributed to this. 1. Obviously profound blood loss 2. Relative low circulating volume in relation to demand during surgery, this means that he may have had less fluid intake leading to surgery. 3. He could have been relatively adrenally insufficient causing him to have a less than efficient flight response due to the stress of surgery. 4. He could have been responding to the anesthesia that could cause him to present as if he is hypovolemic with low Blood pressure. 5. Sepsis or infection could cause hypovolemia, relatively.
The points I have mentioned could all be going on in small degrees causing the symptoms that your husband had. I hope this irons out some worry you have. Good luck.
