Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father who is 59 years old went to emergency 8 says ago experiencing hallucinations. The hospital have him Haldol to calm these hallucinations to which they think he had a bad reaction to. He was sedated with 32mg versed and intubated. They suspected he had serotonin syndrome from the medication they have him. They weaned him from the versed and 5 days after the first dose he was completely off. He was able to open his eyes but not make eye contact. He was writhing and grabbing at his IVs but not any purposeful movement. He eventually fell back into a sleeplike state - without any sedation - and has not waken up since. He does not follow any verbal commands like squeezing out hands when asked. An LP came back negative for meningitis. Kidney and liver function are normal. No indication of seizure or stroke or heart attack. Protein levels in his blood are elevated. No bacteria found in his blood either. He has had a mid grade fever averaging 101 degrees. He s on IV antibiotics for pnemonia he s developed since being intubated however that is getting better. MRI with contrast due was done from his chin to his thighs - nothing obvious found. My question is basically - what could cause him to not be able to wake up after sedation like this? I m not in the medical field but I am worried there s some sort of brain damage.
