What Causes Increase In Cholesterol Levels?

Hi. I had great cholesterol numbers a year ago, but slightly elevated 2 years ago. This years numbers are: LDL-121, HDL-62, Triglycerides-193, & total cholesterol-222. I don t normally drink any alcohol, but did have some Corona s on a recent Hawaii vacation (not very many). I normally eat between 1-3 popsicles each day, which have 14 grams of sugar, each. The only thing that I did different in the last year, really, is adding the popsicles to my diet. Could the popsicles be what s elevated my cholesterol? Thanks, and I hope that you answer my health question

Hello,

Hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol or triglycerides numbers) is caused by a variety factors, the two most important are diet and genetics. Even though sugar intake has low to no impact on cholesterol it does increase triglycerides levels.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends limiting the amount of added sugars you consume to no more than half of your daily discretionary calories allowance. For most American women, that's no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it's 150 calories per day, or 36 grams and for women, its 100 calories per day, or 24 grams. You are consuming nearly 42 grams of added sugar just in popsicles.

So, to answer your question, pospicles are not increasing your cholesterol levels but they are elevating your triglyceride levels. To lower your cholesterol try eating 25 to 30 grams of fiber.

Hope this answers your question.

Best regards,
Dr. Fernando Batiz
