My wife is on treatment for hyperthyrodism since 2008.She was on medication of carbimazole from 2008.As a result of that TSH become normal.Dr advised to stop the medicine and take T3 ,T4 and TSH tests periodicaly. All of them were normal for the last one year.Off late there was a slight increase in TSH( value 0.049) and dr prescribed carbimazole again. Is it safe to become pregnant in this situation?
Hello welcome to HCM. I have read your question and understand your concerns. Your wife has stopped the treatment and the thyroid report again comes abnormal, that shows that she has to take at least low dose treatment for hyperthyroidism. My advice to you is.-
1. I am glad that you have asked this question about pregnancy because the carbimazole Is CONTRAINDICATED IN PREGNANCY AND SHE HAS TO TAKE tab. PROPYLTHIOURACIL BEFORE CONCEPTION. ( Meet your doctor and ask about that earlier, she has to change medicine.)
2 . pregnancy is safe in thyroid patients. So, don't worry. Just do thyroid profile every 3 monthly.
3 . Sonography of thyroid is necessary to rule out underlying cause of hyperthyroidism. Best of luck. Thank you.
