What Causes Increased Appetite And Weight Gain During Menopause?
Every since I quit smoking 11 years ago and went into menopause, I have gained weight and continue to gain.I am 60 years old and in good shape except for being 50 lbs. overweight. Always hungry and never seem full. Never been overweight before, or had issues with weight.

Hello and welcome,
When the woman reaches menopause estrogens level in the body drops significantly. This is normal hormonal change in postmenopause woman. But drop in estrogens causes decreased metabolism, increased appetite and increased fat storage that all lead to increased body weight. Furthermore, age related factors such as decreased physical activity and decreased muscle mass contribute in weight gaining. The previous data shows that women start gaining an average 0.5 kg a year starting from 45 years. Healthy eating and exercises can help you control the weight and also decrease the risk of age related health conditions (eg. osteoporosis).
I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.
Thank you, Malik Amonov MD
