Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Increased Blood Pressure Level Post Steroid Treatment For Cold?
My mom (73 yo WF) has been on oral steroids to help her get over a long cold, also on mucinex and regularly takes blood pressure medications. She feels nauseous and sweaty. We just took her blood pressure which is 170 over 90. She has gained about 5 pounds this week on the steroids but us within her IBW range. We believe she should DC the steroids and mucinex, but don t know how serious ~ i.e. at what point does she need immediate medical attention RT the high blood pressure.
Steroids can cause temporary increase in blood pressure but this should go back to her normal range when the medication is discontinued.
The Mucinex is to help break up the mucus in her airways and should not affect the blood pressure. In terms of the BP readings, she does not need medical attention for these levels.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
