What Causes Increased Heart Palpitations,chest Pain And Breathing Problem After Taking Thyroid Medicine?

Hi Doctor, My sister has taken some medicine for Thyroid and seems it has reacted due to which she is on bed for 2 weeks. Her heart palpitation increases, with sever pain in the back chest and breathing problem. She feels this way periodically every day

I am Dr.Saddiq ul Abidin. I have read you question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

It would have been more helpful, if you had shared the kind of thyroid illness she is suffering from (whether under functioning or over functioning thyroids)? and the drugs she has been prescribed with?

It is quite often to experience, Palpitation with over functioning of thyroid. That may also be Iatrogenic aka drug induced. Because any over dosing of thyroxine can give such symptoms.

Sometimes impartially treated over functioning of thyroid gland can later present with these symptoms as the disease progresses or worsens further.

I would suggest you to get her fresh Thyroid profile done along with an EKG, for any kind of arrhythmia contributing to such symptoms and that should be pursued, as soon as possible. If she were my patient, along with thyroid medicines, for such symptoms i would have started her on Inderal 20mg twice or thrice daily depending upon severity of her symptoms.
