What Causes Increased Saliva Secretion?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here... During my sleep, I keep my mouth open & as a result saliva comes out. Most of the time, I m at sleep & I do not realize it & I do not wake up because of wet feeling of saliva. This is a normal routine & a problem for me for many years. So, because of excess saliva for many years, my face skin (mostly in cheeks area & around both side of the mouth area) is swollen & dry which looks noticeably bad. I m constantly worried & very concerned about two things. 1. I do not know what I can do to stop dripping saliva on my face during the sleep). 2. What can I do to make my facial skin to get better (get rid of dryness or swelling near both side of the mouth). Can you please help & advice what should I do

Hi,

Noted your history about excessive salivation or leaking through mouth during sleeping, spoiling the skin of face.
First of all we have to find the cause of excessive salivation or spillage through mouth during sleep, which can be few of the following:
Such phenomenon is usually observed during childhood and the cause is enlarged tonsils and adenoids.
Other causes can be related to salivary glands having excessive activities, may be due to some inflammation in mouth or salivary glands, cancer, any other mucosal disease.

Hence I would advise you to consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, an actual ENT examination, CT scan or MRI of related area to find any cause say like that of salivary glands, nasaopharyngeal area and so on.
All these will help to find a cause hence having proper treatment which may be in the form of a course of an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory medicines, oral steroids if the cause is allergy and so on.
The cause of dermatitis of skin indicates some allergic or infective pathology giving you all the symptoms. Consult a Dermatologist for proper clinical diagnosis and management.

Take care.
Hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
