What Causes Inter-menstrual Vaginal Spotting?

hi- my husband and I are TTC. My cycles have ranged from 40 days to 24 days for a year with an average of 32 day cycles. The past two months they have been about 26 days. I have two children and had easy, healthy pregnancies and deliveries (I am 35). My question is this- the past couple months I have been spotting for about a day, then nothing, and then about 2 days later I get my period. Is this abnormal? Also, which would be day one of my period, the day I start spotting or the day my regular flow starts? Thanks!

Hi,
The recent change in your menstrual pattern is likely to be due to some hormone disturbance and possibly an early ovulation. The spotting you observe prior to the onset of a period is the pre-menstrual spotting, which can occur when the hormone produced in the body is slightly lower, not lower enough to cause continuous spotting. Your period can be calculated from the day bleeding sets in. If you are unable to conceive naturally within six months, please get help. Take care.
