What Causes Intermenstrual Bleeding After Having Azithromycin For Vaginal Infection?

I was diagnosed 5 days ago with Bacterial Vaginosis and Cervicitis. The doctor started me on azithromycin (2 doses once) and metronidazole (2 doses for seven days). Today I experienced bleeding between periods though I am not due for another 2 weeks. I am also on birth control. What could be the cause for the bleeding? Is it simply my period thrown off or could it be an STD?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

The bleeding could here be caused by either due to the infection or due to the birth control. I would not really worry about this being an STD for now, not until the antibiotics have taken care of the infection at least.

Please also make sure you abstain from sexual intercourse during the course of the treatment and for at least 2 weeks after successful therapy. Please be patient and wait till at least 2 weeks pass from the last dose of the antibiotics.

Best wishes.
