What Causes Intermittent Pain In Left Hip Area?

My husband, 78 years old, 6 feet tall, 195 pounds, in good health, has had a pain in his left hip area, in the gluteus (maximus?) muscle, on and off for 3 years. The CAT scan showed no irregularity. His doctor has referred him to physical therapists that have not really helped. We started going to the gym to do stretching and core muscle strength exercises. When he sits a long time in an office chair (he still works full time at his aerospace firm), it is difficult to stand up, then he flexes and the pain goes away and he is fine. He is comfortable when lying down or sitting with his legs propped up.

I have studied your case and I think it can be nervous system problem. He might be having disc herniation in the spine and it is causing compression of the nerves and that is causing pain and inability to get up.
I do not think that ct scan is right test to perform in this condition. As it does not give us any information about nerve compression or spinal problem.
I would recommend you to get MRI of the spine to see if there is any nerve compression is present . If it is there then he will need different type of treatment then what he is doing right now.
He will have to learn back muscle physiotherapy specially extension group of muscles, Also you will need Pregabalin and Methylcobal to take care of his pain. If there is any problem then you can ask direct question from me.
