Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Just a query for my cousin. She has been in an out of hospital with irregular heartbeat and racing heart and they cannot find anything wrong with her heart. She felt shocking. She has now developed bronchitis and the heart problems have stopped. Is this connected which it certainly seems to be? Thanks.
Hi. Thanks for your query in HCM. I am Dr.Aliem, and I am pleased to answer your query. Irregular heart beat and racing heart indicate that your cousin might have had an 'arrhythmia', i.e abnormal rhythm of the heart. There are a number of varieties of it. It may be physiological (e.g mere anxiety can produce it for a short time), but if it is lasting and symptomatic, it definitely needs early evaluation and management. Bronchitis itself may be a cause for arrhythmia. Most of the arrhythmias are diagnosed by ECG, which certainly would have been taken for your cousin in the hospital. Some patients may have to undergo Electrophysiological Studies (EPS), done only in cardiac speciality hospitals. So my suggestion is that, if your cousin's ECG is consistently normal and she is asymptomatic, there is nothing to worry. Bronchitis needs treatment with antibiotics and bronchodilators, as suggested by your physician. Hope this helps.
