What Causes Itching In The Lower Legs After Hospitalization?

I was involved in a high speed MVA in which I fx my pelvic ring, multiple ribs and my left hip. I also sustained a Grade IV lacerated spleen and still have my spleen which appears to be totally healed as of last year, prior to that my injury should up as a blood clot which reduced in size. I am told I have to have annual ultra sounds of my abdomen to check for possible aneurism. I am also checked annually for DVT in both lower extremities. I am doing pretty well but still have this itching involving my lower legs that drives me insane. I noticed this problem about 3 months post accident . My first thought was that I caught something in the hospital but there evidently isn t anything to indicate this or anything else so what can this be. I had a no medical person who also fx their pelvis and they said it s something called phantom itching . I couldn t find anything on this . Any ideas? Also in 2009 I had 3 full body CT Scans and an additionCT scan in 2010. I refused any further X-rays bc I was afraid of anymore radiation. I received all of this radiation bc my life was at stake. It s been suggested I have back surgery which is done with fluoroscopy am wondering if I should decline but how wonderful it would be if it could alleviate my pain. Thank you for any advise or help you can give me. Sincerely Jewell

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1. Don't scratch the lesion as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a mild antibiotic plus steroid cream like Fusiderm-B cream twice daily on it.
3. Take an antihistamine medication like Levocetirizine twice daily for 7 to 10 days.
4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics, oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
