What Causes Itching On Ankle And Foot?

sprained my right ankle about 6 weeks ago. chipped a bone when it happened. received good treatment, bone resorbed, having physical therapy to strengthen ankle. have noticed that my ankle all the way around my foot and above my ankle on the outside of my foot will start itching for no reason. it drives me nuts. if i make the mistake of scratching it, it just worsens. anititch ointments do no help. just have to grit my teeth. wondering why it itches.....

Hi
Good to know your injury is healing well.
As for the itching , I would like to know if you had any open injury, wound or surgery over the area. As the wound heals and closes up the stretching skin would cause a bit of itching.
Apart from that, are you applying any ointments, etc, regularly over the area. Its possible to be allergic to it. Do you have any prior allergies?
Wearing a tight elastic or crepe bandage causes itching and irritation in many patients. The more you scratch the more it will itch. If this is a possible cause you could use a cotton based bandage or first place a soft cloth over the skin before the bandage. Don't apply strong ointments and keep it covered by bandage for long periods.
As for the physiotherapy, the gels and ointments, wax treatments etc which maybe used can react with the healing skin.
You will have to keep a check on when and what exactly triggers the most itching.

To soothe the area apply a calamine and aloevera cream(like calosoft) regularly. Check for any rashes on the area.
Don't use strong antiseptic/soap over the area.
You may take atarax(hydroxizine) tablets at night and during severe itching to add to the relief.
