What Causes Itching Under Foreskin Of Penis?

Hi I have an itching under my foreskin, I believe it could be either from too much soap and not rinsing properly originally or a friction style rash but I m not sure. Both myself and my girlfriend are clean and STD/I free I have stopped washing with soap, just rinsing with water then drying thoroughly. I have tried germolene but have just purchased some lanacane and eurax creams to see if either will help. I really don t fancy heading to the doctors with this as apart from being an awkward situation, I ve been in and out of there for other things a lot recently. Just one more thing I am currently taking Topiramate I m not sure if that is linked. Thanks in advanced.

Hello,

You are suffering from itching under the foreskin. Your GF and you are STD free. You are on Topiramate. Some people taking topiramate develop pruritis, itching, skin rash, blistering, peeling, of skin. Tapering / reducing the dose of Topiramate will help to improve the symptoms that developed as side effects. Other medical conditions that an cause such symptoms are latex allergy. You are suggested to use non latex condoms.

Some may have allergy with spermicide being used. Avoid the use of spermicide. Balanitis is another medical condition that can cause itchy foreskin. You are advised to maintain good hygiene. Wash your private area with plain water or hypoallergic soaps. If you are having pain you can take acetaminophen or NSAIDs for relief.

Applying a thin layer of hydrocortisone ointment on the affected area will relieve you of the symptoms. You can take a course of Augmentin orally. Take oral medicines after food. Stay away from sex or any sexual activity till it is healing. Wear soft cotton clothes. Do not let the affected area rub against your clothes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
