What Causes Itchy Bump On Clitoral Hood?

I woke up this morning with what feels like a mosquito bite on my clitoral hood, itchy but not sore! Is there anything else it could be and that I should be getting something for or should I just let it run its course? I am 23 and healthy. My period is due this week which might have something to do with it?? I do remember getting it a few years back also and I think it just went away!

Hello and I hope I can help you today,

There are a few possibilities of what could cause an itchy bump like that to appear, especially if you have had this before.

For one, you could have a mucus or sweat gland in the area that occasionally gets blocked- literally it is like a kind of a pimple on your skin. Soaking the area in warm water or applying hot compresses will likely help it to go away.

Secondly, itching of the clitoris can sometimes happen from a yeast infection of the outside skin. If you have a white film under the clitoris foreskin this is most likely the cause and applying a topical ointment for yeast infections to the area should help it go away.

Lastly, and unfortunately, an itchy bump that comes back in the same place in the genital area can also be a symptom of genital herpes. I am concerned that this is a possibility because outbreaks tend to come around your menstrual cycle, or when you are under stress or are sick from something else. A blood test from your doctor can see whether you have been exposed to herpes in your lifetime. In the US and Canada, they test is called the Herpesselect test or a herpes type-specific antibody test. Also examination of the bump by a gynecologist can also conform the diagnosis.

All of these lesions will go away by themselves, but if you have herpes, it is possible to transmit the disease to others so you may want to get the test to make sure. It is not one of the standard STD tests done on routine exams because it is an expensive test, so you may not have been tested before if you never mentioned this symptom to a GYN doctor. The bump can also be cultured if it develops a liquid filled portion like a blister.

So I think it would be wise to see a local GYN doctor who may look at the area and do the appropriate tests to figure out exactly what is wrong.

I hope I was able to answer your question today and that this information was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
