What Causes Labyrinthitis When Cold Air Gets Into Ears?

For many years, my mother has stated she can t be outside in the cold air because it triggers her Labyrinthitis. When cold air gets in to her ears, she gets sick with rhinovirus type symptoms. What condition is associated with something like this? I was under the impression that Labyrinthitis is caused by virus and bacteria, and not the elements. She s taken the measure of putting cotton in her ears to protect them from cold air when she s outdoors. Thanks for your help.
