What Causes Lack Of Bowel Movement And Abdominal Cramps After Taking Flagyl And Cipro?

I have always had regular bowel movements and stools. Recently I returned from Israel and had a bout with some possible food poisoning from tuna. Upon my return to the states my physician prescribed Flagyl [sp?]and Cipro because of a lot of cramping but no bowel movements; but I did not have a stool sample checked for parasites. The pain decreased and I returned to normal bm s until yesterday. I did not have a BM yesterday and then today I keep cramping and the only thing that happens is mucous...sometimes clear sometimes with a small amount of fecal matter. I have not changed my diet, as matter of fact, I m increasing my water intake and fiber but still cramping with no bowel movements. Is it possible that I have a parasite and it s causing the discomfort?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Since you were abroad the intestinal infection caused the changed bowel movements but the course of Cipro and Flagyl have not helped you due to the fact that it might have partially cured the problem and hence the recurrence.
No problems, you can have stool tested and get another course of an antibiotic and other Imidazole to get a relief as guided by the stool reports.
Also take symptomatic treatment with antispasmodics and also take Probiotics.
Get stool samples regularly checked and change over medications as reported.
If this doe not help with, you may have to go for colonoscopy and biopsy to get an appropriate diagnosis so that a guided treatment can be done.
