What Causes Lack Of Maturity And Cognitive Delays In Children?

My 12 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 4. However, no medication has proved to be effective. I am beginning to think that he doesn t have ADHD and that it may be something else. He began received speech therapy at the age of 2 and still receives the services. My son is very immature for his age and has cognitive delays. My son expresses emotions as a normal 12 year old boy would. He can focus on things that he is interested in but is easily distracted or concerned about his surroundings. He has a great sense of direction. I am seeking what an alternative diagnosis could be for him.

From the given description an alternate diagnosis may not be possible. Problems with thinking, or cognitive delays, may be due to one or more of these reasons:genetic defects, significant medical problems before birth or exposure to something harmful in the environment, such as a toxin. I am providing this guideline because you told there is cognitive developmental problem. I would advise you to consider your child as normal and let him play and interact with normal children. That should provide the much required cognitive PUSH your child needs. You may also consult a neurologist / Clinical psychologist to correctly identify the problem and prescribe treatment.
