What Causes Laryngitis With Intensity And Frequency?

In the past 60-days, I have frequently gone hoarse in voice. I take no meds except Prilosec (20 mg) once daily, plus some calcium supplement, and am in good health overall. At first I thought it might be an allergy, but the intensity and the frequency are much higher than experienced in the past. Thoughts?

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. The most common cause of hoarseness is acute laryngitis (inflammation of the vocal cords) caused most often by an upper respiratory tract infection (usually viral), and less commonly from overuse or misuse of the voice (such as from yelling or singing).
Other causes of hoarseness include:benign vocal cord nodules, cysts or polyps,
gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD),allergies, inhalation of respiratory tract irritants, smoking, thyroid problems, trauma to the larynx/vocal cords,
neurological conditions (such as Parkinson's disease and strokes), and
cancer of the larynx.
Since you are already taking Prilosec (20 mg) i.e. omeprazole, most likely cause of intermittent hoarseness of voice in your case is GERD and consequent inflammation of larynx.
