What Causes Less Platelet Count While Taking Accutane?
im in my fifth and hopefully final month of accutane and my blood test results showed i have a low platelet count. i went for a nother test after a week of lowering the dosage from two a day to one. i still have low platelets and have to discontinue the accutane and go to the doctor to see whats wrong. i wanna know if this is likely because of just the accutane or if possibly this can be caused by the fact that in the first 3 and a half months of accutane i regularly smoked weed and had the very occasional cigarette.
Hi, Thanks for writing in HCM. Accutane is chemically isotretinoin, a retinoid which is used for the treatment and prevention of severe acne. It s use does not cause a decrease in platelets as side effect. Hence no need to discontinue it. It must be due to bone marrow suppression due to smoking of weed and cigarette. You need to completely stop smoking and get your platelets evaluated again after 10 days. If it is normal, you may continue to avoid it throughout the treatment.
