What Causes Light Periods And Brown Whitish Discharge Post Depo Withdrawal?

I am 38. Never had children. Been off of the Depo shot for 1yr 3mos (was on it for approx. 15yrs prior). I have been having periods every month since going off of the shot, though they do not last long. I have not had one this month, though it was due 2 wks ago. I have had a brown, creamy discharge a couple of days a week for the last few weeks. I thought that it was the common prequel to starting my period, at first. It has the same coloring and occasional strands of tissue. My breasts have been sore and swelling, some days more than others. I have an appointment, but they cannot get me in for 3 more wks. Should I be concerned?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

At times, women who have been on the depo shot for some time and go off it, can result in hormone imbalances. This is not very common, but is seen in at least 1 every 10 women and is indeed a sad side effect of the Depo shot.

I would indeed seek medical attention, but you will need medications to correct the abnormalities and possibly even look into other causes with the help of an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis, hormone level check, hysterosalpingography (HSG), etc.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
