What Causes Loss Of Pigmentation On A Child's Face?
My daughter (3 yrs. old) has recently been losing pigmentation on her face and has several white hairs in her eyebrows. This is recent (noticed the hairs about 5 months ago and just noticed the pigmentation about 2 months ago) It seems to be getting bigger, and is definately more noticeable with being out at the pool this summer. What is it and is there anything I can do to help even it out? I have a drs. appt. but it isn't until august.
Loss of pigmentation just as you described may be leucoderma or vitiligo, if started loss pigment in the hair more runs for vitiligo. The initial treatment for vitiligo is topical treatment with topical steroid, So I recommend applying a steroid cream like hydrocortisone cream 2 times a day for 4 consecutive weeks or pimecrolimus 0.1 % cream 2 times a day for 4 consecutive weeks.
According to your children age (3 years) and if the children does not have any other skin problems, before the start of treatment should take a picture of the area to compare it after treatment. You said that this problems is more noticeable during the summer, so another hypopigmentation disorder is pityriasi alba, a skin condition mostly appear to children who have atopic skin during the summer.
In this case you can use an emollient creams for children, but still need a careful examination of the skin, wood lamps commonly is used to make differential diagnosis of vitiligo with other skin hypopigmentation.
I hope I have answered your query. If you have other questions feel free to ask me.
