Cannot say in his particular case without actually being there, BUT
quite a bit of common serious, life-threatening disorders occur in alcoholics.
Liver failure would cause:
1) fluid build up in the body especially in the abdomen
2) hormonal imbalance and loss of appetite
3) loss of proteins made by the liver that prevent bleeding this and the fluid build up cause blood in the stool which is often fatal

Alcohol, withdrawal, pressure from fluid all cause burping. Generally not serious but in this case probably is a sign of serious problems.
