What Causes Low Hemoglobin In A G6PD Deficient Child?
Hi Dr. My son (going to be 9 months in 5 days) has been diagonised with G6PD and his level is 0.5 (normal is 4.5 to 13.5) and his haemoglobin is 8.7. does he have serious G6PD? What could be the cause in drop in HB and what foods to avoid? Your response will be appreciated!!! We are Indians... just FYI because this found more in Asians.
Exposure to certain medications or food causes breakdown of RBC (hemolysis) in patients of G6PD deficiency leading to decreased HB (Anemia). Following is the partial list of medications/chemicals your child should avoid. Always ask your doctor before giving any medication for safety in G6PD deficiency.. In particular your child should avoid the foods, drugs and chemicals on this list: Sulphonamides Co-trimoxazole Dapsone Chloramphenicol Nitrofurantoin Chloroquine Primaquine Quinine Methylene blue Fava beans Sulphasalazine Hydralazine Procainamide Quinidine
G6PD deficiency is a lifetime disease. Most people with G6PD deficiency have a completely normal life as long as they avoid certain foods and drugs.
