What Causes Low Sodium And Bladder Infection In A 70 Year Old?
My motherinlaw was taken by ambulance to the hosp. this a.m. They said she had dangerously low sodium and a bladder inf. Her feet have been swollen for several wks, dr. said old age as she will be 100 in Oct. she is also on Metoprolol, lives on her own has a dropped bladder due to 1/2 of her uterus being left over 70 yrs. ago, can you help us
Your mother in laws problems sound very common problem in elderly patients. Since she has a prolapsed bladder there is frequently incomplete bladder emptying which is a set up for bladder infections.
The low sodium is a very serious problem and would need continued lab monitoring and evaluation by her doctor to find the cause. Excessive drinking of fluids can cause low sodium along with diuretic medications for hypertension. If I were her doctor I would need to perform a complete history and physical to determine the cause of her low sodium
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
