What Causes Lump On Roof Of ?mouth

I have a small lump on the roof of my mouth. I get them occasionally and they usually go away after several days. The one I currently have is about the size of a bean or pea. It is hard, and kind of sore when I press on it with my tounge or finger. What is the cause of this bump?
