General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This lump is most likely a ganglion. This is a kind of cyst connected with a joint and filled with joint fluid. It may appear and disappear. Pain is very characteristic.
I suggest you to consult a surgeon with it. In case of doubts ultrasound should be done.
The cyst should be removed.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
