Hi. The lunula of the the index finger (left hand) on my husbands hand is flaking and there is a small degree of separation between the nail and the skin of the cuticle and part of the finger just below the cutilce. There is no discolouration - it is just white and flaky in that area and there is a single longitudinal line the length of that nail - like a little ridge. What could cause this and how do we treat it? SAlly
There is a breakage of eponychium(cuticle) on the proximal part of left index fingernail of your husband.
It may be due to minor trauma, vitamin A deficiency or bad habit of pricking this area. The longitudinal ridge on nail may be due to damage in nail root in past, that has no significance.
Breakage in eponychium has got importance as it may lead to secondary bacterial infection. Give him a diet rich in vitamin A. Apply moisturiser on the area. Avoid pricking the eponychium.
