What Causes Membranes Over Retina?

I currently was told by a retina specialist that I have a membrane over the retina on both eyes, with one being worse than the other. I had cataract surgery last year and am wondering if something like this can be caused by said surgery and also what can be done to remedy the situation. Your response is appreciated.
