Hi, I had an MRI done last week with contrast and it showed possible microvascular ischemic disease. I am 51 years old. I was involved in a serious car accident 4 months ago and they only performed a c-scan which showed a hemarage in the brain. Hospital never followed up with an MRI. Please note, after the accident I was unconscious for a period of time. I feel the microvascular ischemic disease is related to the head trauma of accident. How do I prove this to my doctor. I have no other health issues. Please help.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Actually, the microvascular ischemia (synonym WHITE MATTER DEGENERATIVE DISEASE) is the one thing in your picture NOT ASSOCIATED with the trauma. Everything else you mentioned certainly could be. MICROVASCULAR ISCHEMIA occurs as a NORMAL PROCESS of aging and can be seen in MRI's of people over the age of 35-40. It is even more likely to be seen in the brains of people who are hypertensive, diabetic, hypercholesterolemic, smokers (ongoing or previous), kidney disease. And there are other conditions. Trauma is NOT associated with the development of this process.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
