Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been waking up in the middle of the night with middle back pain an intense burning feeling in the middle of my back. It started a week ago. After lying in bed for a couple of hours I am awakened by this pain. My doctor thinks it s muscle. I am taking a muscle relaxer and pain med of naproxen, but this only helps for a short time. I have no problems bending over or walking around sitting sometimes becomes uncomfortable but the worst is when I am in bed an wake up after three hours or so with this acute burning sensation in the middle of my back. Any idea of what it could be or is my doctor right and I just have to ride this out for awhile.
You should keep following your doctor's advice though at all times. If your doctor has examined you and believes this is a torn muscle then this is the most likely cause. Doctors look for 'red' flags when assessing back pain and I'm sure your doctor did not find any. If the pain does not wear off after a while then radiological evaluation might become necessary to exclude more serious causes. A week's time though is not enough time to initiate further evaluation without any 'red' flag.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
