What Causes My Persistent Yellow, Watery, Foul-smelling Stool, Abdominal Pain, Gas, Nausea, And Unexplained Weight Loss?

Hi, I m not sure what to do. For two weeks now at least my poop has not been normal. First it was yellow and watery and floated, then it got darker, more orangy and mushy/semi solid, but has now gone back to watery and yellow. It doesn t smell like poop either. To me it smells like burnt hair or melting plastic. I have also been having gas, and abdominal pains resulting in a sometimes decreased appetite or feeling of nausea. No vomiting or fever to my knowledge. Recently went on a vacation with my husband to Cancun, MX and while careful not to drink any water than wasn t bottled, I did have about half a glass served to me by the waiter at one of the resort s restaurants. Returned home to a sick child with the flu. Thought perhaps one of those two things may have caused the issue but it s been 2 weeks with slight improvement and then backsliding again. Additionally, I saw my primary Dr yesterday for unrelated issue and now kicking myself I didn t bring this issue up. Weighing in at the doctor s office I also have lost weight without trying or changing eating or exercise habits. To my best knowledge I am about 15 lbs lighter than the last time I weighed myself 2-3 months ago. I am a female, 37yrs old. What could this be or what should I do?

Hello,

Your symptoms are indicative of indigestion, gastroenteritis or intolerance to certain food that you have been eating. Such symptoms commonly occur in cases of IBD, inflammatory bowel disease, thyroid problems, liver dysfunction or depression. You are advised to take antacids or PPIs, one stat daily for 5-7 days to help reduce gas formation, abdominal pains, bloating & discomfort.

You are advised to take boiled food over hot, spicy, fried food. Avoid taking packaged or processed food. You can get stool examination (R/E and C/S), liver function tests, T3, T4, TSH, CBC, Hb%, Blood sugar(F/PP) done. Take digestives & Liver tonics.

Take antidiarrheal medicines, keep yourself well hydrated. Boil 3 raw bananas, mash it, add a little salt & take it with a small bowl of hot rice. It will keep you feeling better & watery stool will stop, Take it twice daily.

You are very young, get clinically examined by a GP & get required imaging tests and investigations done. Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis made. Get treated at the earliest. Avoid anxiety, do not take stress, physical or emotional. Avoid depression, stay cheerful.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
