What Causes Nausea After TB And Thyroid Medication?
Hello, I have an important question. A patient is on Tb treatment that includes the regular regimen + levofloxacin for her pneumonia. She takes 4mg zofran 30 mins (3.30pm) before taking her tb meds at 4pm but everyday at 7.30pm she starts to feel nausea and pukes out about 8 fl oz and its a dark red color, same as the rifampin. (Patient says puke/cough tastes acidic, a lil sour) So the first question is that is this a normal side effect to have on these drugs? Second is that what can we do to prevent the medicine from coming out? We are concerned that if this amount of rifampin continues to come out then is the needed effect still going to be there? Please provide us with any advice you have for this situation, thank you very much for your time.
I appreciate your concern for this patient with nausea due to Anti TB medications.
Well, nausea and vomiting do occur during the course of treatment of TB. Red color of the vomitus is due to the drug Rifampicin, nothing to worry about it, it is a harmless change of color.
Rule out other causes of nausea and vomiting:
Another fact is most of the Anti TB medications are known to cause liver injury resulting in pain abdomen, nausea, vomiting and sometimes jaundice. Liver function tests are done to rule out the possible liver toxicity. If the lab results reflect the liver injury, may be your patient has to use alternate medications for TB. You are advised to visit your treating doctor for the clinical assessment of the patient.
Meanwhile ask your patient to take Zofran atleast one hour before taking the Anti TB medications.
