What Causes Pain And Swelling In Ankle?

i have a plate and about 8 screws in my ankle, this happened about 9-10 years ago. Just recently my ankle is very sore and swollen and is a little red. I have never had this issue before. Could this just be a fluke thing and could it possibly go away?
