What Causes Pain And Swelling In Leg?

My elderly mother has suddenly develped a very swollen left leg from her knee right up her thigh. It's causing her a lot of pain, and she is now hardly able to walk on her own. Strong anti inflammatories have made no difference. Any ideas what may be causing this ?

Swelling of one leg could be due to infection of the leg ( Cellulitis ) or due to partial or complete obstruction of blood flow to that leg .
Swelling associated with pain points more in favor of infection for which she requires Antibiotics along with Anti-inflammatory drugs .

I advise you to take her to doctor and get her started on Antibiotics . Also it would be better to get Doppler scan of left leg to look into the blood flow to left leg.
