What Causes Pain And Swelling On The Toe?

about a month a go i thouht i broke my middle toe and 4 days ago my toe started to get swollen and red and it does look broke because it looks like i have a bone popping out they took xrays and it is not broke and it looks like there is something in my toe. I was checked for gout and came back negative i have to wear a preop shoe and i cant even touch my toe because it is in so much pain and its red and swollen. I am worried there is an infection
