I haven't missed a period yet and am on birth control. I am exclusively breastfeeding my 10-month-old and the last couple of weeks breastfeeding has been very painful. He has also been sick... cold/virus. Is it more likely thati am pregnant or him being sick is causing this pain?
If your baby is latched on properly, you may have 30 to 60 seconds of pain (from the nipple and areola being pulled into your baby's mouth), then the pain should ease. But if you continue to feel pain, stop feeding momentarily and re-position your baby on your breast.
Do one home pregnancy test if you were sexually active. It will help to rule out pregnancy though you were regular on pill and doing Exclusive Breast Feeding (very LOW risk or chance).
Mastitis or breast abscess or cracked nipple should be ruled out through proper clinical examination. Wear comfortable breast support.
You may require one course of antibiotic medicine for bacterial or yeast infection (if any). Apply cold pack, clean your nipple, maintain hygiene, take Ibuprofen tablet if pain is heavy or non-tolerable.
Hope, it helps for your information. Good luck and take care.
